Writer Rumble is a seriously fun new word game.  The user gets to play a literary writer (Edgar Allen Poe, Jane Austen, etc.…) and do battle with monsters.  Their only weapons are their words.  When playing the game you slide your finger over the letter tiles to form words.  The words attack the monsters and help you to survive.  At only $0.99 it is priced just right for us to tell everyone about it.  Right now this app is only IOS compatible, but in early 2013 it should be available for Android as well.

Book

Zombie Calling by Faith Erin Hicks is one of the best books we read this year.  It’s a Graphic Novel set at a college campus.  The main character is a regular girl, who notices that zombies are taking over her college campus.  She suddenly turns into a serious butt kicker (the way we all would if there was a zombie apocalypse) and tries to save herself and her friends from becoming zombie dinner.  This is an extremely funny and fast read.  Click here to put the book on hold with your Douglas County Library card.

Music

Sleigh Ride by Fun from the CD Holidays Rule is the song we have been singing all week.  We are seriously getting into the holiday spirit her at the library.  Click here to put the cd on hold with your Douglas County Library card.

App

Flashcards* is a fantastic and free flashcard generating app.  We were able to download the app to study for our classes, and even share the cards with each other.  It’s easy to use and beats using note cards!  This is a great app for studying.

Book

Pretty Crooked by Elisa Ludwig is a modern day Robin Hood story set at a fancy prep school.  Willa plans to steal from the rich kids and give to the poor kids at her school, but when the cops start investigating things get a little crazy.  This is a fun book that we really enjoyed.  Click here to put it on hold with your Douglas County Library card.

Music

Home by Philip Philips is the super sad song we are listening to this week.  We have been watching the video on YouTube pretty much nonstop.  His voice is so perfect and he seems so Emo in the video we just want to give him a hug.  The CD is called The World From The Side of the Moon and you can put it on hold here with your DCL card.

App

Mc-tube is a free app that lets us watch YouTube on our IOS devices without any ads.  It also lets us download something and watch it offline later.  It’s just an easy way to enjoy Youtube, with more features than the YouTube app offers.

Book

The Dead Girls Detective Agency by Suzy Cox is one of the most fun books we have read in a while.  Charlotte is nobody special.  She has no enemies and does not make waves at school, so it’s kind of a surprise when she is pushed in front of a train and dies.  All of the sudden she is a dead girl and she must find out who killed her before she can move on.  It’s a unique take on the paranormal mystery genre and we give it four stars.  Click here to put the book on hold with your Douglas County Library card.

Music

Misfits and Lovers by the Wallflowers is the best song we have heard in a really long time.  We love this upbeat rock song.  The chorus sticks in our heads like bubble gum in our hair.  Click here to put the CD on hold with your Douglas County Library card or click here to get a free download from Freegal with your DCL card.

Light Writer is just fun. Seriously it serves no real purpose and we feel silly using it, but…It’s FUN.  You type a word or words into the app and then wave your phone across your body.  The app projects the word in front of you like a light banner.  That is all this app does…but it cool!  At this time the app is only for the iPhone and it costs $0.99, but we think it’s worth it.

Book

Seize the Storm by Michael Cadnum is the book we could not stop reading this week.  This family is sailing on a yacht from California to Hawaii when they are caught in a storm.  During the storm they bump into a drifting boat and they find a pile of money and two dead bodies.  They have to decide to take the money or not and live with the consequences.  This book has hit men, storms, action and adventure.  We really loved the fast pace of the story.  Use your Douglas County Library card to put the book on hold.

Music

Red Hands by Walk Off the Earth from the CD R.E.V.O. is something totally new that we are listening to.  We found the band while we were searching on Freegal.  We really like the singers scratchy voice and the guitar riffs on the song.  Click here to download the song for free with your Douglas County Library card.

App

The app this week is not an app at all.  It’s the Testing and Education Reference Center.  This is a service that the library subscribes to so that we can use it for free to get ready for tests.  It has free online SAT and ACT testing, as well as a bunch of other tests that we have never even heard of.  It even has a scholarship search!  It’s the best thing that we have found to get ready for college.  You can use the service for free here with your Douglas County Library card.

Book

One For the Murphys by Lynda Mullaly Hunt is the book of the week.  We read it in to days, and we can’t wait for you to read it.  Carley wakes up in the hospital after a fight with her mother and her mother’s boyfriend.  She finds out that she will be living with a foster family while a criminal investigation goes on.  She moves in with the Murphy’s and starts a new school while trying to figure out what will happen to her and her mother.  This book is about the three months she spends in foster care and the people she meets.  We really loved this book.  It’s a great story and even though the main character is a girl, this is not a girly tear jerking book.  It’s a story about family and survival.  A definite must read!

Music

Girl on Fire by Alicia Keys is the song we can’t get enough of this year.  Her voice is so powerful and the beat is ridiculous, so we love the song.  You can download it for free here with your Douglas County Library card.

What do you get when you cross a spy novel, a graphic novel, and the truth with an app?  CIA Operation Ajax.  The story is amazing and you can just enjoy the graphic novel if you want.  While you enjoy the story you can learn about the true history of the CIA plot to stage a coup of Iran’s government. It include recently declassified documents, historical photos, and video film reels.  They are embedded into the story so you get to see people like  Eisenhower, Churchill, the Dulles brothers, and Mossadegh.  This app is helping us to understand the history between the U.S. and Iran in a new way, and it looks really cool. This app is $4.99 and you can get it on Apple IOS devices.  It is coming soon to the Kindle Store as well.  Click here to check out their website and see a demo of the app.

Book

UnWholly is the book this week.  We love Neal Shusterman and we have been on hold for this book for a while.  Sometimes sequals don’t live up to the original, but this book is the exception.  It’s fast, exciting, and really makes you think.  Now that we know this is going to be a trilogy we can’t wait for the last book to wrap this all up for us.  Click here to put this book on hold with your Douglas County Library card.

Music

Back when My Chemical Romance was recording their last album they recorded several songs for a record they were going to call Danger Days.  They scrapped those songs and started over on the record they would later release as Danger Days.  They are now releasing those tracks!  This past Tuesday was the first day to get the new songs.  They are going to release 2 tracks a month over the course of the next 5 months.  You can download the songs from iTunes and Amazon or order the singles from their website.  We downloaded “Number One” and we can’t stop listening.  There are two songs for $1.99: Boy Division and Tomorrow’s Money.  We can’t choose a song this week, because they both ROCK!!  Click here to check out the songs on iTunes.

Bad Piggies is the game we can’t get enough of this week.  If you have ever wanted to see pigs fly then this is the app for you.  This ridiculously simple and addictive game is made by the Angry Birds people, so you just know you are going to spend an hour zoning out as soon as you download this game.  There are sixty levels, pigs flying, and a nice little puzzle to figure out.  You can get this for PC, MAC, IOS, and Google Play.  At only $2.99 you will get your money’s worth.

Book

There is a monster outside Connor’s window.  Not the monster from his sad dreams about his mothers cancer treatment…A real monsters looking for the truth. A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness is the book we read with the covers pulled up over our heads and the lights on this week.  We looked for something scary, and the pictures in this book fit the bill.  We checked out the book, opened it, and read something incredible.  This book is not just scary, and sad, and funny; it tells a story we were not expecting.  Click here to put it on hold with your Douglas County Library card.

Music

The Sleepies’s new single Terra Firma is the song we could not stop listening to this week.  It is fun and fast and really loud, which helped to cheer us up after reading the sad and scary book this week.  This band is brand new and they are kicking butt.  Click here to check out the video for their new song.

Plague Inc. In this game you create a plague and unleash it on the world.  The object of the game is to create a plague so virulent that it kills all life on Earth.  (OK so it’s a little gruesome, but it still science.)  Once your plague is unleashed you wait to see if any of the scientists on Earth can come up with a cure.  If anyone in the population lives, you lose.  This is a strategy game is like Risk, but with bacteria instead of war.  I’m not sure why we love this game, but it is a great time waster and it is fun!  At only $0.99 it is worth a try.  You can get this game of Apple IOS devices and Android devices.

Book

Battle Dress by Amy Efaw is the book we picked this week.  It’s the story of a girl’s basic training at West Point.  Even the guys liked this one.  It was funny, sad, and very accurate to the West Point experience, because the author graduated from West Point.  This is a must read book!  Click here to put it on hold with your Douglas County Library card.

Music

Too Close by Alex Clare is the song of the week.  We love his voice, the lyrics, and this crazy video.  Click here to check out the video and click here to put the CD on hold with your Douglas County Library card.

It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown is our app of the week.  So what if it’s a kid’s story.  It’s the GREAT PUMPKIN!!  We loved this movie when we were kids and we love the app.  This is basically a pop up book for your iPad.  The app tells the original story but there are lots of extra features; you get to be a character in the story! This is something fun that you can read with a little brother or sister, or just be sneaky like us and read it yourself.  At $4.99 his might be the most expensive app we have ever recommended, but it is so worth it that you might need to save up your babysitting money and buy this app. There are two downsides to this app it costs $4.99 and it is only for Apple IOS devices.

Book

Texas Gothic by Rosemary Clement-Moore is helping to get us into the spooky Halloween mood.  This is a girly ghost story with goats.  We highly recommend this to anyone who likes a little humor mixed in with their scares.  Click here to put it on hold with your Douglas County Library card.

Music

Spectrum by Florence and the Machine is the song that is stuck in our heads this week.  Our friend Sarah played it for us and now we are addicted.  Click here to put this CD on hold with your DCL card. If you can’t wait for the CD to come to you, click here to check out the video for the song.
