  • Teen Photography Contest Judges

Date: 2011.11.29 | Category: Teen Contest, Teen Photography Contest 2011 | Response: 0

This year for the Teen Photography Contest we once again have 2 expert judges.  These judges and the popular vote will decide the winners of the photography contest.  Here is a little bit about our judges.

Justin Balog is back again as our head judge.  He is a Colorado based photographer with over 20years behind the camera. Currently, Justin runs the adventure photography blog  http://www.lightasmagic.com/ where you can find new images from around the world every weekday.  He is always traveling but has made a little time to judge our contest this year!

Artist Brittany Van Eysden was raised and lives in Colorado Springs, CO.  Growing up she was greatly influenced by Music like Bob Dylan, Books by Richard Brautigan, and the mountains and plains that surrounded her.  It wasn’t until a camera was placed in her hands that she felt true passion.  When Brittany was introduced to the wet darkroom her passion grew and a dedication was made.  She is currently working with medium format plastic cameras and is finishing her Visual Arts Degree at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.

The 2011 Philip s. Miller Library Teen Fashion Design Contest was huge success this year thanks to the hard work of our teen designers and models.  They took some pretty tragic donated dresses and made them into fabulous new garments.  Tim Gunn would be proud of their accomplishments.  Everyone did a great job, and with the votes of 170 friends, family, and community members it was a tough job to tally the votes.  The winners are:

    1st Place

Designer Kira Hein and her model Taylor Greenway

    2nd Place

Designer Giana Delgado and her model Amayrini Munoz

    3rd Place

    Designer and model Rebecca O’Horo

The judges also gave out awards for their favorites.  The judges awards went to:

    Kira Hein and Rebecca O’Horo

This was also a food drive to benefit our sponsors The Douglas / Elbert Task Force.  During our show the participants brought in 221 pounds of food for local families.  The girls who brought in the most food are:

Lucia Handby, Brittany Garrett, & Lauren Catbagan

It you liked the food at the Runway Show you can check out the cookbook I got the recipes from at the library.  Click on the book cover to link to our catalog and place a hold on the book. Big Book of Cupcakes by Jan Moon

The white cupcakes with the blue icing were “Over the Moon” cake on page 37.

The carrot cupcakes were “Little Carrot Cakes” on page 68 (I substituted coconut shreds for the almonds).

The chocolate cupcakes were “Chocolate Truffles” on page 164.

  • Teen Fashion Contest Runway Show

Date: 2011.07.07 | Category: Events, TIC, Teen Fashion Contest | Response: 0

The Philip S. Miller Library Teen Fashion Contest Runway Show is almost here.  On July 30th at 5:30 the designers and models will take to the runway to show off their designs.  After the models walk the runway, the designers will have to discuss their designs and our judges will offer critiques.  Then it’s up to the audience to vote for the winners.  Prizes will go to the top 3 designers.

The Douglas Elbert Task Force is sponsoring this event.  They donated many of the dresses that the girls used to make their new designs.  We will be having a food drive called Fashionistas for Food.  Friends, family, and everyone else in the audience will be asked to donate non-perishable food items to the designer of their choice.  The three designers with the most food donations will win a gift basket put together by the task force and local Castle Rock businesses.

Bring your non-perishable food to the show and I will see you on the runway.

(Registration is not required to attend the Runway Show)

The 2011 Philip S. Miller Teen Short Film Contest Red Carpet Event was a big success thanks to all of our filmmakers, their families, our amazing sponsors, and everyone who attended.  We had 113 people in the audience eating fantastic sandwiches donated by Sprouts.  The short films were funny, scary, exciting, and entertaining.  It was difficult to choose the winners, because there where so many excellent entries.  The crowd voted and while volunteers and staff tallied the ballots, the audience got to see a preview of the new Transformers movie, “Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon”.  They also watched a trailer by a local film maker and got some information about the upcoming Castle Rock Film Festival. Finally the ballots were totaled and the winners were announced.  Congratulations to all of our filmmakers; you are all talented and your work was excellent!
