Meet the Judges – Teen Fashion Design Contest
This year we have a panel of judges to help us choose the winners. The audience will still get to vote, but the judges will give an evaluation of each garment and will talk to all of the designers on the runway. Here is a little bit of information about our amazing judges:

Ginger Delgado is an Emmy Award winning journalist with more than 20 years of experience. Throughout her career she has reported on high-profile stories all over the United States. She dedicates her time to speaking at metro-area schools and universities about how to break into TV news and the importance of education. Teen Fashion Contest Runway Show
The Philip S. Miller Library Teen Fashion Contest Runway Show is almost here. On July 30th at 5:30 the designers and models will take to the runway to show off their designs. After the models walk the runway, the designers will have to discuss their designs and our judges will offer critiques. Then it’s up to the audience to vote for the winners. Prizes will go to the top 3 designers.
The Douglas Elbert Task Force is sponsoring this event. They donated many of the dresses that the girls used to make their new designs. We will be having a food drive called Fashionistas for Food. Friends, family, and everyone else in the audience will be asked to donate non-perishable food items to the designer of their choice. The three designers with the most food donations will win a gift basket put together by the task force and local Castle Rock businesses.
Bring your non-perishable food to the show and I will see you on the runway.
(Registration is not required to attend the Runway Show)

2011 Teen short Film Contest Red Carpet Event
The 2011 Philip S. Miller Teen Short Film Contest Red Carpet Event was a big success thanks to all of our filmmakers, their families, our amazing sponsors, and everyone who attended. We had 113 people in the audience eating fantastic sandwiches donated by Sprouts. The short films were funny, scary, exciting, and entertaining. It was difficult to choose the winners, because there where so many excellent entries. The crowd voted and while volunteers and staff tallied the ballots, the audience got to see a preview of the new Transformers movie, “Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon”. They also watched a trailer by a local film maker and got some information about the upcoming Castle Rock Film Festival. Finally the ballots were totaled and the winners were announced. Congratulations to all of our filmmakers; you are all talented and your work was excellent!

Imagine It Teen Writing Contest Winners
The winners for the Teen Writing Contest were announced last night at a reception in the Aloha Teen Tower. There were so many entries and the topics and styles were amazingly diverse. Choosing a winner was not easy. Congratulations to all those who participated, and a big thank you to our judges! The winners received Barnes and Nobel gift cards, and ribbons. The winners are:
1st Place goes to Entry 21 – The Battle by Abby McFadden. Abby is 13 years old. Her poem impressed the judges as well as the online voters. Abby not only won the judges vote, but she also won the popular vote.
2nd Place goes to Entry 13 – The Unknown by Angelique Jones. Angelique is 15. The judges felt that this thriller made good use of time and sentence structure. There is not a single wasted word or phrase. The online voters agreed, because she was voted in the top four of the popular vote.
3rd Place goes to Entry 11 – Why I Write by Krysty Chennaux. Krysty is 16 years old. Her beautiful phrasing, language, and passion about the topic of this poem made it a favorite with the judges.
This was really hard to judge because there were so many amazing entries. Even though everyone who entered the contest did an outstanding job, the judges felt that in addition to the top three winners, we need to give special attention to four other entries. The following writers all received Honorable Mention from the judges:
Natasha Koeplin for Entry 12 – Dream
Takyra LeBlanc for Entry 10 – Horse: a haiku
Katelyn Pyfer for Entry 20 – I Imagine
Skylar Thomas for Entry 1 – Imagine It
Congratulations to all of the winners and to all of the teens who entered the contest. You all did an outstanding job. All of the teens who entered received a critique from the judges at our reception. I would like to thank our judges: Jessica Swaim, Sally Burr, and Gail Ross. They gave of their time and expertise and we all appreciate it.
