Noomi Rapace, the actress who played in the three Swedish movies of Stieg Larrson’s books, was unknown to American audiences, and she seemed to fit my impressions of what Lisbeth Salander might look like. It is sometimes difficult for a well-known actress to play a character that has been so popular or infamous according to your feelings about her. The American films need an equally brooding type of actress to portray this character. Lisbeth seems more real than almost any other literary character I’ve encountered, and to do her character justice, the actress needs to be able to portray a troubled woman in a real way, not just a stereotyped idea of a punk/hacker. This is the type of role that can make someone famous, so I like the idea of an unknown person playing Lisbeth. Appearance is not as important as acting ability and that special dark quality that made Lisbeth intriguing. Many actresses could dye their hair black and wear black contact lenses, but that rough personality would be difficult if you didn’t have a little of that quality in your personality somewhere.
