The low-down:
We know what’s going to happen. A bunch of people will show up at our libraries on Dec. 27 with their shiny new ebook readers. They will ask what we’ve got for them.
Some of us have Overdrive or NetLibrary, of course. But thanks to the leadership of CLiC’s Valerie Horton, Colorado libraries have another option.
The e-Discover the Classics collection encompasses 466 ebook and audiobook titles harvested from Project Gutenberg. They are all perfectly legal to download and keep. Valerie has made a file containing the MARC records for these titles. Each MARC record includes a link to the download (from the Project Gutenberg site) directly to the new mobile device. By importing these records into your ILS, you will integrate nearly 500 classic titles right into your library’s catalog.
Project Gutenberg offers files in several formats, that work for scores of devices. Format and device info is available here: http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Gutenberg:MobileReader_Devices_How-To
So what does all this mean to you?
1. You need to know that CLiC is looking ahead, offering a free holiday gift to Colorado libraries and their patrons. To look over their resource, and get these titles in your catalog see: http://www.clicweb.org/e_discover/e_discoverhome.html (And let’s give a hearty virtual round of applause to CLiC!)
2. Publicize this service to your patrons. A sample press release is available here.
3. You need to be prepared for the patrons who show up expecting us not to disappoint them. DON’T DISAPPOINT THEM!
4. We need your help to build useful documents for libraries and patron about how to get content onto particular devices. A lot of you are already messing around with this on your own. Let’s share our experiences here.
